Rules and Regulations Governing Training – the Curriculum

The rules and regulations governing training are contained within the Curricula. These are approved by the GMC, who are the regulators of training.
The majority of trainees are now on the 2010 curriculum. However some more senior trainees are still on the former (2007) curriculum - this will continue to have GMC approval until January 2016, so that these doctors can complete their training.
New versions of both curriculums are published from time to time, in the light of changes to training content and programme rules and GMC guidance. Urgent changes to the programme are published as Training Programme Updates, which are then incorporated into the curriculum.
Core trainees have the option of completing the Acute Care Common Stem (ACCS) programme, which includes both anaesthesia and intensive care medicine together with Acute Medicine and Emergency Medicine. On completion of ACCS trainees can apply to join the anaesthetics training programme at ST3. The anaesthesia component of ACCS is nearly identical to the first six months of the core Anaesthetics programme.
