Shape of Medical Training: securing the future of excellent patient care

The Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) welcomes Professor Greenaway’s comprehensive report; Shape of Medical Training: securing the future of excellent patient care and the themed recommendations contained within it.  The RCoA supports the vision of the report and many of its concepts.

There are a number of areas in the report, which will require further collaborative work in order to be achieved.  Some of these may prove challenging to implement.  Appropriate consideration must be given to the feasibility and impact of the proposed changes, many of which are significant and will require integrated planning from a vast multitude of stakeholders to be effectively delivered.

The College welcomes the opportunity to work closely with the Shape of Training Sponsoring Board and in particular the national training boards and the AoMRC as part of the Delivery Group in securing the future of excellent patient care from an appropriately trained workforce.

The Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) is the professional body responsible for the specialty throughout the UK, and it ensures the quality of patient care through the maintenance of standards in anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine.

Comments on this report from Fellows and Members of the College are welcome and should be addressed to: shape@rcoa.ac.uk.
