RCoA response to GMC consultation on UK medical register

The Royal College of Anaesthetists has responded to the consultation by the GMC on developing the UK medical register. The proposal for the medical register to provide more useful information to reflect modern medical practice seems reasonable. However we are concerned over how the GMC will manage the additional information supplied by doctors, as proposed in the consultation document, and ensure that this is thoroughly validated.

We are also concerned about the proposal for a tiered register and the inclusion of voluntary information; if not tightly controlled, the new register will be open to misuse by unscrupulous individuals who may not be completely honest with the information they offer. We believe that the register should only contain accurate and validated information and should not be a place for doctors to advertise themselves.
