College ACCEA Nominations 2017 Round

William Harrop-Griffiths will again be leading the process this year with administrative support provided by my Executive Assistant, Amanda Regan.

ACCEA will open the 2017 round on Tuesday 28 February 2017 and it will close at 1700 on Tuesday 25 April 2017, thus allowing approximately eight weeks to complete the process. On this basis the Royal College of Anaesthetists’ process will run to the timetable below.

09:00 13 March 2017
This is the absolute deadline for consultants who wish to apply for Bronze, Silver and Gold national awards to submit forms (Word documents please) to President’s Executive Assistant,
Please identify a citation writer and include this information in your email submission.

The College will forward CVQs to Regional Co-ordinators on your behalf. Bronze applications will be forwarded to Regional Co-ordinators for review; they will offer you guidance if appropriate. If you are advised to amend your form please submit the revised version to no later than 0900 Monday 27 March

17:00 25 April 2017
2017 Round Closes.

As in 2016, there will be significantly fewer awards than before 2009: 300 in total for England and 16-18 for Wales. This means that the College is only able to support up to 43  Bronze, 4 Silver and 2 Gold applications. It is therefore imperative that we only submit applications of the highest quality that stand a significant chance of success. If your Trust does not award local points please include this in your CVQ along with an indication of when you were last able to apply for local points, and please ask the Medical Director/Chief Executive to reflect this in their citation.

The guides to applicants are available on the ACCEA website and have changed little from the 2016 round guides. We would like to highlight the following:

  • Applicants for renewal who failed to renew at the same level but were successful at a lower level can submit evidence since their last successful renewal, i.e. if you gained a Gold in 2011 but had it downgraded to a Silver in 2015, you can include evidence from 2011 in your application for a Gold award.
  • If there are extenuating circumstances that have affected your application, such as ill health in yourself or a close family member, you should inform the ACCEA secretariat as soon as possible, i.e. before the deadline for submission. Although the extenuating circumstances should be mentioned in your application, you should have contacted the secretariat separately before submitting your application.

I must emphasise again that this is a totally electronic submission process and that it is the responsibility of the individual nominee (and not the College or the Trust) to ensure that their application is submitted electronically to ACCEA by its deadline. This application must also include the Part 2 completed and signed by their employer; the College is not involved with this part of the process. It is helpful, however, for the College to have sight of the completed form, including Part 2, which should be e-mailed to after submission. The College’s only responsibility is to produce a ranked list of nominations, accompanied by national citations for each nominee, submitted by e-mail.

With best wishes

Dr Liam Brennan FRCA
