The Lives of the Fellows: First Board of Faculty 1948

An introduction to the history of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

The Royal College of Anaesthetists’ Lives of the Fellows brochure has been produced during the College’s 25th Anniversary of receiving its Royal Charter. An adapted version of this document was presented as a gift to HRH The Princess Royal when she attended the College’s Anniversary meeting in March 2017 (see below).

The earliest Fellowships of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons of England were awarded by election, and thus these ‘Foundation Fellows’ were those recognised by their peers as being central to the development of the specialty. RCoA’s Heritage Committee has led the research into the lives of the first 21 Fellows who comprised the first Board of the Faculty of Anaesthetists. Their brief biographies are presented within this document.

Extended biographies can be read on the Lives of the Fellows section of the College website where you will also find an article by Dr Anne Thornberry, RCoA Honorary Archivist and Chair of the Heritage Committee, on the influence of the two World Wars on the Foundation Board members.
