Physicians' Assistant (Anaesthesia) Register

The RCoA and AAGBI, in collaboration with the Association of Physicians’ Assistants (Anaesthesia) [PA(A)s], have drawn up an agreed scope of practice for PA(A)s.

The document replaces the previous RCoA position statement of 2011, and signifies that both the College and AAGBI have an aligned policy on Physicians’ Assistants (Anaesthesia).

Under the Data Protection Act 1998, we have a legal obligation to control how we collect, use and store personal information

Data Protection
The RCoA maintain a public voluntary register of Physicians’ Assistants (Anaesthesia) (PA(A)s) which is required as the prelude to achieving statutory regulation by a national healthcare regulatory body..

The RCoA is a data controller (as defined in the Data Protection Act 1998 "DPA") and is subject to the requirements set out in that Act. We process your personal data only as permitted by the DPA and in accordance with our Data Protection Policy.

We collect general personal information about you including your name, date of birth, and email address, as well as work-related information such as place of work, name and email address of your supervisor, appraisal information, CPD points, level of experience, and scope of practice.

How we use your information
When you apply to join the voluntary register we will process your personal information in accordance with the DPA.  We will use your personal data, including cross referencing with the institution that you qualified through, for the purposes of administering and assessing your application to join the register.

How to access your personal information
You may obtain confirmation of the information that we hold about you at any time. If it is incorrect we will promptly correct it when we have received the appropriate notice or evidence from you in writing.

You are also able to make a request for all information that we hold about you under section 7 of the Data Protection Act 1998. This request must be made in writing and we make a charge of £10 for each request.

Storage and retention of records
We will hold and use your personal information only for as long as necessary and in compliance with the DPA.
